OPERATIONS AT RAIL SIDINGS Ben Wilson Strategic Rail Authority @ the North East Scotland Rail Freight Group Conference Promoting Rail Freight at a more modest cost Moving shipping containers by rail can offer a more economical option than the road alternative. A container movement by rail also usual means a short movement by road, collecting the shipping container from the rail terminal to the customers site. Unfortunately it is often the Intermodal facility, the system of transferring the shipping container between the road and rail, which makes rail more expensive than a journey made completely by road. Containerlifts self-loading container vehicles can transform an otherwise redundant rail siding in to a fully operating road/rail interface. | | - The huge investment in container handling equipment is avoided.
- There is no need for costly civil works such as reinforced concrete.
- The train can get closer geographically to the customers premises reducing the road shunt distance.
- When there is no train to be worked the Containerlift vehicle can be used for local road container deliveries.
| | | | The associated savings with Containerlifts equipment can make the rail option, commercially, much more attractive. |
