In From The Cold?

March 12th, 2010

Have we seen the worst of it? A question probably every regular road user in the UK is asking themselves!

The record cold winter and the prolonged period of the ‘big chill’ has wreaked havoc for the transport industry.

Those of us in the shipping industry will have coped with numerous closures at the ports and depots due to snow, ice, fog and unsafe working conditions all adding to the lengthy delays on the road networks. Everyone will have a story to tell like Mariusz Materka a Containerlift driver operating from Southampton who was stuck in snow for 2 days only 800 metres from his delivery site.

The cold weather also put particular strain on mobile service operator and our own Engineer Richard McMillan who were inundated with breakdown calls. Common problems were flat batteries and brakes freezing on overnight.

With true gritty British resolve we have pulled together and to this extent a special thanks to all of Containerlift’s customers, subcontractors, ports, container depots and colleagues in the industry. Without the co-operation, flexibility and understanding of all, the winter would have been a great deal harder.

With the first signs of a long awaited spring, the birds singing, the daffodils emerging and the strange yellow/orange light in the sky making a show, you may be forgiven for believing the disruption is over until next year. Think again. We now face numerous delays as repairs are made to the broken up and pot holed roads. That’s assuming our councils have the money to make the repairs!

2010? We battle on!
