World’s First Wind-Powered Container Ship to Sail Between France and Madagascar

In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable maritime transport, French cooperative Windcoop has commissioned the construction of the world’s first wind-powered container ship.

This innovative vessel is set to operate between France and Madagascar, marking a significant advancement in eco-friendly shipping.

Vessel Specifications and Design

The 91.3-meter-long open-hatch boxship will have a capacity of 210 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), including 40 reefer plugs for refrigerated cargo. It will be equipped with three asymmetrical wingsails, each measuring 350 square meters, designed by Computed Wing Sail (CWS). These sails are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 60% compared to conventional cargo ships. An auxiliary diesel engine will ensure continuous navigation during calm conditions.

Construction Timeline and Financials

The vessel’s construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 at RMK Marine shipyard in Tuzla, Türkiye, with delivery and commissioning anticipated in May 2027. The project is estimated to cost €28.5 million (approximately $31.3 million), with €6.8 million already raised in equity. The remaining funds are expected to be secured through structured loans and counter-guarantees from domestic banks.

Operational Route and Cargo

The ship will operate on a route connecting France with Madagascar, including ports in Tamatave, Diego Suarez, and Majunga. It is designed to transport goods such as aquaculture products, cocoa, vanilla, spices, essential oils, and textiles from Madagascar to France.

Passenger Accommodations

In addition to cargo, the vessel will accommodate 12 passengers, offering them an opportunity to experience life aboard a wind-powered cargo ship. This initiative aims to provide a unique travel experience while promoting sustainable maritime practices.

Windcoop is already studying the construction of a second ship to ensure monthly service and is exploring new routes to further expand its environmental and social impact.

“We’re not just building a ship. We’re building a new vision for maritime trade — one that’s clean, fair, and rooted in respect for our oceans.”
Spokesperson, Windcoop Cooperative

The development of this wind-powered container ship represents a significant step toward reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport. By harnessing wind energy, Windcoop aims to set a precedent for sustainable shipping practices, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
