Little “Stowaway” Cat Survives Epic Journey from China to Minnesota in Shipping Container

How did a tiny stray cat end up halfway around the world—and live to tell the tale?

A resourceful feline has stunned animal lovers after surviving a three-week voyage in a cold, cramped shipping container crossing the ocean from China to Minnesota. Now affectionately named Stowaway, she was discovered emaciated but alive in Oakdale by staff from Minnesota’s Northwoods Humane Society.

🗺️ The Incredible Journey

  • Route: Traveled over 6,500 miles inside a sealed cargo container.
  • Duration: Survived for approximately three weeks without food or water other than condensation.
  • Condition: Severely dehydrated and dangerously underweight when found — but remarkably alive.

🏡 Rescue & Recovery

  • Rescuers used a humane trap after sighting her inside the container.
  • Named Stowaway, she’s now under care at Northwoods Humane Society before moving to Pet Haven in St Paul for foster care and eventual adoption.

Renee Rude, executive director at Northwoods, praised the cat’s resilience and recovery:

“It’s incredible… I can only imagine three weeks in a container without food or water. She must’ve been eating rodents and drinking condensation.”

🌟 Miracle on Board

Stowaway’s story is a testament to animal fortitude. Despite perilous odds, she’s showing signs of gaining weight, building strength, and learning to trust humans again. Foster carers hope to see her blossom into a loving pet once fully recovered.
