MSC has taken another major step to solidify its market dominance, as the world’s largest container shipping company has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Hengli Heavy Industries of China.
According to a report from DynaLiners, MSC has ordered ten ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) with a capacity of 21,000 TEU, all equipped with LNG/dual fuel capabilities.
The first of these massive ships is expected to be delivered in 2027, marking yet another phase in MSC’s aggressive expansion. This move comes as MSC looks to further cement its position as the leader in total TEU capacity, especially as new container shipping alliances are poised to reshape the industry in February 2025.
Interestingly, this marks Hengli Heavy Industries’ first foray into container shipbuilding, as the shipyard previously specialised in dry and wet bulk carriers. Originally linked to the now-defunct STX Dalian, this shipyard’s pivot into container shipping signals a new chapter for both the company and China’s shipbuilding sector.
MSC’s order showcases its commitment to greener shipping solutions, with LNG/dual fuel vessels offering a way to reduce emissions while maintaining efficiency. It also demonstrates MSC’s strategic foresight as it prepares for a future independent of the current shipping alliances.
This order is just the latest in MSC’s ongoing spree of newbuilds, indicating the company’s intent to stay at the top of the global container shipping market for years to come.
